Cold Weather Nights

Today's high temperature was to have been 115. I don't know if it truly reached that awful number, but I am aware it was at least 112... at 7pm. It had to been at least near 100 inside my house, though, it was on the cool down. I had shut off the AC for a good portion of the morning and early afternoon, and once I turned it back, things returned to somewhat near normal, though it never yet quite reached the temperature range we keep it at during the summer. I awoke this morning about 3:30am to dripping sweat and a soaked bed, got up to check the AC, and it was frozen up again. Off it went, and now almost 2 hours later, it is still somewhat warm inside, though not nearly as bad as the daytime had been. I will be leaving it off until probably mid-morning.

Reverend Mother and Preacher Tom celebrate their anniversary today. I think it is the 30th, if I remember RM telling me right. I recall when she told me, I mentioned that the concept of them being married 30 years was sort of weird, considering I am 40, and I have been married 21 years. Obviously, it is because it is their second marriage....but it still just sort of seems weird. Happy Anniversary to you both!

Today starts the early bird hours for the oldest son. He is supposed to be 'on the field' by 6:30, so that means dropping him off about 15 minutes prior. I asked him last night how much time in the morning does he need to do his morning ablutions. He is starting to be like me. He says 30 minutes - from waking up to being out the door. I'll be waking him in about 20 minutes, so we will see how that works. I had told him previously, I was not going to spend 30-45 minutes trying to get him up and moving of a morning, and wait til the very last moment to rush him off to school so HE isn't late. Went through that with his sister.

Yesterday I was at a bit of a loss as to what to do with myself since the boys were back in school. I ended up spending part of the day watching 'Eureka' on Netflix. PT was having some problems with a letter, so I went over and helped with that as well. I got to learn how to scan a document, use OCR and put into an editable format. I hope the end results I achieved will work for him, so at least he wouldn't have to try to e-type the letter, and all the formatting, etc, that was included in it. Not saying he could not do it, just that it would have been more of a pain in the ass to accomplish.

This morning, I will be headed over to the MIL's to sit with Dad so she can get some shopping done. For me, that means reading time, pretty much. I heard from my grandparents yesterday. This past July they celebrated 65 years of marriage, so they are in their early-mid 80's. I guess my Grandma had a heart attack scare, which turned out to be gallbladder related, after a couple days of testing in the hospital. It is good to know she is doing fine and is back at home, though the thought of her (or Grandpa) passing away is something I definitely do not look forward to find out about. I know, I know. It's a fact of Life, and at their age, expected pretty much anytime. I just am not sure if I am ready for it.

Well, the alarm clock just went off in the bedroom. I suppose I should think about getting the son up though it is still like 45 minutes til I need to leave.

Movie Day!

Welcome to Wednesday, aka Hump Day. This is the first day I don't have all three boys at home. I decided to opt out and spend the remaining days this week sort of one on one with each of them. Except, when I made that plan last night, the Wife changed it. I guess she has Friday off, to see the doctor, so will move that son's day to next week. Either way, I know somehow it will all work out.

Today should be fun. I have already gotten the gym out of the way this morning, as well as the shower. Plans to follow include: heading to the theater to watch "Battleship", possibly visiting a my buddy in the rehab, and either way, get over to a certain store that has some really good specials I want to get. Seeing how it is my house, the specials are Kool-Aid Jammers drinks, and Bar-S ham. The two older boys eat more than I do most days.... unless it comes to lettuce, then I got them beat hands down.

Not sure which son will be staying home tomorrow, or what plans I may make happen. I know the Wife and I were talking last night, that we need to let the middle son know how much we appreciate his effort. To explain, he helps out around the house more than the others, even if he is the one that complains about shopping, or that he is bored, the most... he feeds/waters the pets each morning (without being asked), willing to do the dishes (when I don't want to - which is every chance I get), and just regular things that need doing. I am thinking about taking him to Castles & Coasters for a day. This is a place where they have a few smaller attraction rides (including a loop coaster) and 4 different putt-putt golf courses, plus a huge inside of video and arcade games. I haven't decided yet, but am leaning close to that idea.

I need to get some other things done before we head out for the early showing of the movie.

Will He Do It?

I have got to be one of the worst fathers in the world. At least, I am sure my oldest son is thinking that this is true. I have kept him confined to his room, supposedly working on missing assignments, over this past weekend. Yeah I know.... I bitched about that last week. Only, he still has NOT completed them yet. And on Friday? Well, we received a note from his Science teacher, that he has an F in that class (a big difference from the C reported on his mid term report) and that he is missing another 5 assignments from that class. Plus, oh this is where I start losing a bit more of my sanity, the Science teacher had informed him of this PRIOR to notifying us, and the son STILL was not going to tell us. He is supposed to be going on a trip Friday for CA, for a competition festival for Band (they only class he seems to be passing, excluding PE). I don't know if he can even go now due to his grades. After paying around$300 for him to go.... Sigh. This weekend, asking him for the umber of assignments completed, I think it came down to "2"...out of a needed like 9. At this rate, he will be repeating 8th grade, and be grounded until he just gives up on high school and gets his GED at age 35. I exaggerate, but surely you can understand how I feel.

Tonight, they scheduled just last week, to have a concert to perform the musical selections that will be played on the CA trip. I would not be surprised if they do not allow him to play tonight due to grades. If they don't, I will probably lose it - blow my top. Not in disagreement with the the school, but at the son, because that will mean he won't be playing on the trip, and I am out that money. PLUS, the Wife still has to go as she is a chaperon. I'm going to be dwelling on this all day, no matter how I try not too. I am not going to be pleasant to be around tonight.

Sigh.

Gonna Be One Of Them Days

Some mornings, you just wake up and have one of those internal feelings, that your day is gonna be something. I don't get them often myself, or if I do, I don't notice it much. But every now and then, I can say from the time I open my eyes, that it is going to be a good day, or a bad day, or whatever. Today, it feels like Ick. Not Ick as in sickly feeling, just a bit different than Blah. Could be a good or bad thing.

I am done with the son. The three of us talked about grades, school, and future last night, with the result being that we, as parents, are giving him all the responsibility in completing/turning in homework. Not that we won't help when asked, but we cannot be hounding him about it, especially when he lies to us and tells us he has none. We gave him long-range possibilities of what would happen if he continued to not care about his schoolwork, including the chance of no financial help once graduated from HS, to even the extreme of sending him to some facility where delinquents were just short of criminals. Okay, the last one was more a 'scare tactic', but either way, I hope he got the hint. We made sure he knew that even though it was his duty to complete his work to the best of his ability, but if he was not proving he could do better (ie, if needs help, asking; show he is struggling with it, etc) then he is going to suffer repercussions. Hint: Grounding, loss of privileges, etc. Now to see if he understood.

Either way, it is going to help free up some of the stress I have been feeling the past couple days about that whole situation. I think it is working a bit too. He was up til after 3am this morning finishing up his research paper that is due today. Why so late? Because he was trying to blow it off I think. Not my problem now though.

Well, I think I need some breakfast this morning. I feel like I want to go back to bed, too, but have to head to MIL's to sit with FIL this morning. I guess he went to the doc yesterday, and his Parkinson's is still gaining on him. Wish so much there was a cure for it. Even the doc told MIL to seriously start looking for an assisted living facility. MIL has been trying the past year or so, to handle him on her own, but you can see the stress she has been under. Part of that 'in sickness and in health' feeling she has, and of course, it gets expensive, and that's if they don't make you sign over all your money to them (the assisted living facilities).

Okay, I am out. Have a nice Thursday!

Dragging Knuckles

Remember comic strips, and even cartoons, that always showed the big thugs looking like gorillas, arms so hairy, big and long that they looked almost like they were dragging their knuckles on the ground? I almost feel like that this morning. I have been stressing the past couple of days about my oldest son's grades. I tell myself that it isn't my problem, that he is the one that has to correct the problem, and it will affect him more than myself. The problem is trying to believe that statement.

As a parent, I know there are areas that I just extremely suck at, when it comes to setting an example. I am not sure where I would be considering to excel at, either, but that is a different matter. Granted, my kids weren't around when I was in high school, nor when their mother was in college - well, the boys anyways - to see how doing one's homework was a requirement to get through the class with a passing grade. I'm trying to get that into my son's head, without beating the living crap out of him.

The past two days I have told him to check with his teacher(s) to find out what the missing assignments that they are allowing to be made up. Yes, I emphasized that he will be working on them every night after school until they are done. He is down to just under four weeks of school left, and he needs to get his grades up. Both nights he has come home (without his schoolbooks) with an excuse as to why there was not time to talk to ONE teacher about it. He conveniently 'forgot' to ask at least one other teacher (who has indicated he is missing work).

I don't know what to do at this point. I am debating sending an email to the teachers explaining that due to 'classroom activities' (as my son says) he hasn't the time, so would they feel free to send the list to me, and I would be able to be sure he completes all work. I have threatened this to him, but it seems to make no difference. The Wife and I have tried to sit down with him and explain how this will make a difference if he even makes it to 9th grade, let alone setting up a good habit for when he is in high school - where they won't allow one to make up missing assignments. All I get is 'I don't know' and the whole careless attitude about the whole thing.

I have nothing to "ground him" from.... he has never been one to be very social. He's still 'opening up' to that. Short of time on the computer, where he plays video games, I can't think of much else.

I know these past two years, the two classes he seems to be missing the work from are both advanced classes (English and Math). He has mentioned time and again that in high school, they would probably be too hard for him. I don't think so. He is very intelligent, just is lazy. The Wife and I were talking last night, and I mentioned I was already saying he was taking regular Eng. and Math in HS. Mainly because I don't want to have to go through this crap again. But he doesn't know that yet. Think it would make a difference now?

Am I stressing over this too much? I don't want him to be held back a year just because he is lazy, and the possible (and in my head very much imagined) ridicule he will receive from classmates.

Sigh. I just don't know what to do at this point.

I think I will write his teachers tomorrow though, if he doesn't bring home the list of assignments today.

On a good note - I lost another 3 pounds this week. I am now at a new high for total weight lost.

Trying to Plan Out the Day

Sometimes, I just don't understand my kids. In particular, the oldest son, who is turning 14 next month. Yes, I know. The average parent can NEVER understand their teenage offspring, but this is a bit different. Not only have the Wife and I had to nag on him about due dates for certain school projects, but he has over the last year, become a Journeyman Word Manipulator. What's that, you ask? Simple. He uses the English language in the way that suits whatever his current purpose ahead.

This past week, at least twice I have inquired about the 4th quarter book project his English class does. After five minutes of my inquisition (correct word) I finally am able to determine that the current phase is a 'group' portion, and he obviously cannot do alone, and is not needing to be completed until Friday (Friday being the time I am guessing - he had said later this week). I have to play 20 Questions with him, it get any information, and it is especially worse when the end result is he has to do some work.

He has also become quite good at neglecting to give us information on things he is required to need. Last night, after being home for quite some time, and about an hour before bed, he informs me he has to be at the school by 8:30 this morning. This is the time his bus normally picks him up, and it truly is no bother for me to take him earlier. I questioned why. His response? 'I don't know. The band teacher just told us the whole band has to be there by 8:30.' Is there some concert performance during the day? There is nothing on our calendar we are aware of of concerts this week. 'I don't know.' Special event at school you need to perform for? 'I don't know.' The Wife and I think it may have something to do with a 6th grade orientation today, but otherwise have no clue.

This morning, as I did my morning routine of emails, I received one from his English teacher, that she had sent last night - after I had gone to bed. It stated they are working on research papers. This was never mentioned by the son - even when asking about school projects earlier this week. The email mentions that they have outlines due TODAY, and in class today will be working on the thesis statement, and first paragraph. No worries. The last of the email says that students should have a flash drive available to use during the time they are working on the papers, so that students will not have to re-write work between class & home. Did the son bother to tell us? Of course not.

While taking him to school this morning, I inquired, well, more like 'grilled' him about it. Yes, he will need a flash drive. No, he didn't think to let us know. No, his outline is not done as the teacher had him change a portion of it so he is "slightly behind" where he should be. Should he have mentioned this last night, when I asked if he had any homework? I think yes, but he thinks because they will be working on it in class today, he shouldn't be required to say it is homework. I told him due to his inability to manage not only his time (again) and be responsible to let us know when other items are needed for schoolwork (the flash drive) he was going to have to get through today with none of it, and that we would be on his ass about the research paper constantly. I even threw in the possibility of contacting his teacher if his evasiveness in answering out questions was going to be happening. He was not a happy camper when I dropped him off. I am not exactly thrilled myself.

Today I was thinking was going to be a decent day. It is cloudy out, with a bit of wind. High temp is only to be about 81 (down from the 100+ we had last weekend). Now I have to make a special trip out shopping to get him a flash drive, and I really am not in the mood to go to any stores. but now that I have to get out, I probably will head over to get a haircut as well. I know I need one.

I think I am just flustered with dealing with the son.

Countdown (cont.) and Guest blogging

One and a half days to go of work before the vacation starts. God I hate when it gets this close, because everything slows down until right before you leave - and then you realize you didn't have enough time to get everything you needed, so you rush things together and hope you don't have to get new stuff while on vacation. ::PHEW:: That's why I am trying to get packed and ready tonight. I hate doing things last minute.

My little brother Stuman is going to Guest Blog for you whilst I am away from the keyboard. I am heading to his house tonight after work for some adult beverages and to show him how it is done. He sounded a bit apprehensive on the phone, probably worried about what he should or shouldn't say. Like the loving family member I am, I told him to write about whatever he wants - if I don't like it I'll flame his ass later! Can't you just feel the love?

Anyone out there use this FireFox browser? I just downloaded it a couple days ago, and installed it on a mem-stick. For those out there that put up those YouTube videos, I can't watch them at work. Seems the admin took out the apps I needed to view them, and I don't have access to override the d/l to put them back. Well, with FireFox on the mem-stick, I plug in the USB, and now can watch them - plus it seems sorta nifty. Maybe that is just the new novelty of it. Back to the question I want to ask - Has anyone had problems with this application?

Last night I felt really good, thanks to my oldest son. I had gotten home and was doing the regular - checking through the snail mail, listening to the wife as she was telling me how things went that day, checking schedules and times between the two of us. Well we finish up and my son sits down across from me, looks at me and says, " Dad, what do you do for work?"

Now I know I have mentioned to the kids off and on over the years what I do, and they are always more interested in the physical therapy the Wife does, than my job. I can't blame them. I yell at people, and do a lot on the phone and computer. But I figure he's old enough to understand a bit better (he's 9) so I told him: "I work in the mortgage business, helping people save money, or save the home they are in, or get them extra money. Why are you asking all of a sudden?"

"So, you don't really yell at people during the day?"

"Well, maybe not all day long, every day. But yes, I do have to do that occasionally. Why"

"Maybe when you get back from San Diego I can go to work with you one day while I am on summer break."

"I don't think the office owners would mind that. You could bring your Gameboy and the dvd player because for you, my job is probably boring."

So we have to pick a day once I am back that he can come to work with me. I am just surprised he would show interest in this field. More understandable if I were an officer or paramedic or something. Either way, it's one of those 'feel really fuzzy and good inside' feelings - I don't get them too often. To top off the convo, he had also asked about after work, if we could stop and have a drink and a game of Golden Tee. I tell you what, that boy is growing up just like his old man. ::insert Harry Chapin song here - 'Cat's in the Cradle'::

Alrighty! My popcorn bag is now empty, so I guess lunch is over and I need to get back on to the stack of crap on my desk. I have been drained mentally by the end of the day this week. But it is nice to be busy again. Y'all smile a bit, and be sure to come on back when yanto. Much obliged ::hat tip::
