Birthdays and Life Changes

Whew! Since this weekend, there has been quite a bit going on in my Life. I usually gripe about how boring things are for me, and how nothing exciting happens. Well, I am not saying this was exciting, but it was still a lot to take in.

My friend from Florida, My Ginny, flew in as she does every year for my birthday. At one point during her visit, someone had asked how long we had known each other, and we came up with in our calculations, that it has to have been about 25 years. Already at our Silver Anniversary (I joked to her about it). Either way, we were able to have some one on one time Friday night. Saturday arrived, and I was at the Post by about 11:30am to start the afternoon of my get-together. Overall it went well. Quite a few friends from some of the pubs I attend showed up for a bit. I was a bit more surprised at the number of Post and Aux members that showed up, just for my event. I guess I am liked at the Post more than I thought I was. I didn't get drunk, and kept all the drinks to just shots. Friday night, after a couple beers, I decided beer just wasn't tasting right and decided to get quit drinking beer for a bit. Saturday I had about 10 shots over the course of 12 hours.

Now we need to backstory a bit. Back around early July, my bellybutton decided to become an 'outie' versus his status of years as an 'innie'. It wasn't fully projecting outwards, but was making a transition was very obvious. There was no pain, and I did a quick Google search of what it could be. Obviously, an umbilical hernia, that carried the chance of one of the intestines getting clotted into the 'hole in the muscle wall, etc. For the time being I ignored it, as, well, no pain. Follow through to August, and I start noticing some abdominal pain occurring infrequently. Enough that I couldn't pin point where exactly the issue was. I decided to kind of keep watch and see what happens. By the end of August, I knew something was going on, but no clue. No pain around the bellybutton. I was having bowel issues, as in not having any BMs, except with the use of a laxative, and it was never solid. My abdomen was becoming more projected, and under pressure, literally, to the touch. By my birthday, I couldn't bend over to put on my shoes, the abdomen was so extended and tight, there was no lee way. I also started having quite a bit of pain flashes through the area.

Sunday morning I slept. When I woke, I felt like some of that pressure had lessened, and knowing I had a Dr appointment in November, I wondered if I could hold out that long to get things evaluated. Monday came. By evening, I was worse. Full pressure, shortness of breath, still no BMs, very little urine, no appetite or thirst for the past 2 days. I began to worry. The Wife looked up symptoms, and of course, liver failure was one of the major ones. I refused to believe it was that bad. She offered to take me to the ER if I felt bad enough, but I said no, come morning if it was bad still, I would get an emergency appointment with my Dr and go from there. I made it to about 7am. Woke the Wife, said let's go to the ER.

To cut out the short boring stuff, six hours in at the ER, a CT scan, and blood for labs, they agreed to do a paracentesis, as the abdomen issue was fluid build-up in my body cavity. So they inserted a tube into the side of my abdomen, and proceeded to pump out the fluid. And pump. And pump. All said and done, they removed 11.7 LITERS (that's 25.7 pounds) of fluid from the abdomen area, that was freely floating in there amongst all my organs. Then it was decided they needed to keep me over night to see a GI doctor, as well as monitor me. So, my first time EVER staying in a hospital as a patient, and now that I am home, it sucks. Never recommend. So, still Saturday, the Doctor assigned at the time to me came and explained that I have a decompressed liver. Here's and explanation:

"Decompressed liver" refers to decompensated cirrhosis, a severe stage of cirrhosis where liver scarring is so extensive that the liver can no longer perform its vital functions properlyThis advanced liver disease is marked by symptoms such as jaundice (yellow skin), ascites (abdominal fluid), confusion (hepatic encephalopathy), and bleeding from varices. Causes include viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Treatment focuses on managing complications, addressing the underlying cause of the liver damage, and often involves a liver transplant.

So, yeah. The liver is failing on me. I decided right then that I quit drinking. The Dr asked if I was having the shakes, since it had been about three days since my last drink, and I was like, no. I'm fine. I have been weaning the alcohol back for some time due to the diabetes anyways. Come Wednesday, another Dr assigned to me. Decided I could be discharged allowing that I contact a liver specialist and a GI doctor within the next 4-5 days, as well as my PCP. They gave me 5 new prescriptions temporarily to help, and maybe longer deciding on what these other doctors want to do. At least it cancels out a couple of the ones I currently take. I was able to eat the nasty hospital food Saturday night (first meal in like two plus days) but breakfast and lunch on Wednesday... I couldn't even swallow the first bite. They just tasted to wrong and bad. Wife was there for lunch, had her try the bacon from the BLT wrap I ordered, and she said it as fine. SO I know it was me. Finally got discharged about 4pm, grabbed my papers, stopped at the hospital pharmacy and got the meds, and headed home. Wife stopped at Arbys, as she needed something to eat. I got a regular, plain roast beef, and a vanilla milkshake, both of which went down fine. I crashed when we got home, having not slept much since Sunday morning. Which explains why I am awake at 2:30am.

So no more drinking alcohol. Nobody has modified my diet (as of yet) but I have been good about monitoring with the diabetes. I was told my sodium intake needs to increase (after years of saying to decrease it) mainly because I am on a water pill now and it will drain a lot of sodium and potassium. I think I am sticking to water for now, no tea, no soda, until the doctors are able to determine how bad things are. Who knew turning 54 would be such a life changer.

Today is 9/11 and a day of remembrance for those lost on the airline flights, and buildings the crashes were involved in. The Post is doing a flag raising at 10am I am going to try to be at. Afterwards I need to get to work on the agenda for next week Riders meeting, as well as contact the doctors to get appointments scheduled. Let's see how day one on new pills goes...

Getting Too Old

Monday was a fun day. Friends and I went out and tailgated at the State Farm Arena, and after game start, we went to a local pub they know of for a couple more beers and some food. After the game (we watched at the pub) they went home and I went to a pub I frequent. Then went home. I did have an accident that night, somehow lost my balance in the bathroom, and fell. I must have hit my cheek on the wall or doorframe, because I had a couple cuts on the inside of my cheek, and what feels like bruising a small area of the jawline. Tuesday morning when I woke, I could hardly move (from all the walking at the stadium) as my legs were so sore. I was supposed to have an Aux meeting that night, but not moving well, I skipped it.

Wednesday I felt a little better. I did get up to Walgreens to pick up some prescriptions I had ready. They charged me! I know it had been a month since my last refills, and 99% of the 'scripts are "preventative" and usually are at 0 cost. but for 4 of them yesterday, it was over $22 (still cheap, I know) and one, the insurance refused to fill anymore. I have an appointment on the 10th and will address these issues with the NP.

Today has not started off badly. Woke about a due to the Wife's alarm. Now just waiting a bit longer to check my glucose and BP numbers, then will find something for breakfast. I think this afternoon I will go to the Post and hang out drinking iced tea for the afternoon, and get some reading time in.

Christmas day 2024

Heck, it is here, and I'm posting early. Mainly because the Wife has the bed covered with crap she has to wrap for tomorrow (today) and I can't lay down to go to sleep. And I thought insomnia was bad...

Tomorrow, I learned tonight, we are going to the Middle Son's place to do our "celebration" and exchanges. I love that he and his partner have opened their domicile for this to happen. I'm excited to see ALL my children in one place!!!

It sucks, sorta that We have to wait until Saturday to do the same at my parents, but they were nice enough to not rush us for time, and we get that much more time with them as well.

So now I am killing time, waiting for the Wife to get done wrapping, so I can go to sleep. IF I can, cause this damn insomnia. I have had friends tell me I should look into edibles, those (for lack of better words) pot-infused gummies. I gave $20 to a girl that goes regularly, and am supposed to pick them up Friday. Yes, in AZ I can buy my own, but.... I asked her. Curious if they work well. There might me a My Chart note to the NP that I found something that actually works, so quit that 'scrip on that shit that don't work... just saying.

And with that...

Hope you ALL have a MERRY CHRISTMAS (or whatever you wanna call it)....

A Day of Racing Around ....

or of watching a bunch of cars going round and round at high speeds.

A bit later this morning I will be picking up the guys and headed out to Phoenix Raceway for the NASCAR race today. It will be nice, as I get a chance to catch up a bit with the Oldest Son, since I don't get to see him too often. Other than that, I'm not really thrilled about the race thing. I know there will be lots of walking, and the traffic will be atrocious after the race. I do have some friends that camp at the track, and the thought of visiting with them while we wait for traffic thin out, crossed my mind. But that would be even more walking, and probably up hill somewhat as well. Are you able to tell I don't want to walk much? I'm still somewhat sore from the walking at the concert the other night....

Friday I had gone to see the NP as scheduled. We talked about my meds and how things were feeling. Pretty much decided to wait until February to see how another three months will adjust things, plus will do another lab at that time to check numbers. Then I brought up the insomnia issues. Originally, she prescribed hydroxyzine, but I guess before calling it in, she did more research. She called me at least a couple times about some ideas she had, and finally after me telling her, that she is the professional and would know better what would go with the current medications, and medical issues I have, she decided on gabapentin. When I told the Wife, she said she hopes I didn't react to it the way she did. I guess after looking it up, it is normally used to treat neuropathy, epileptic seizures, but if you read further (and the right sources) it says sometimes used with diabetes, insomnia restless leg syndrome, and nerve pain. The side effect the Wife was talking about however, is the clumsiness (yes, really). I'm more worried about the drowsiness, as I am taking it for insomnia, but it is a pill I am going to have to take everyday versus as needed. I didn't make it up to Walgreens yesterday to pick it up and start it, so I guess I will end up doing that tomorrow, unless the Wife will do it today while I am gone. Will see how this first week goes. If I start getting major side effects, maybe I should start doing the edible weed stuff or something....lol.

So up at 5a today (thanks insomnia) but at least got about 4 hours sleep, so should be able to get through today well enough. I think I may leave earlier than planned and grab me some breakfast somewhere before picking the guys up.

I Prolly Should ...

I prolly should ... get started on the Youngest's school registration paperwork. His 'scheduled time' to be there is Thursday at 11am, which means we are going to be there for a couple hours I am sure. His is the last group of the day, and by then, the lines will be so backed from the school not organising the process as well as it should have. How does that happen every year, even though the school has been open for well over 35 years? I shouldn't complain too much, I guess. For most years of having to do the registration process, we have lucked out as the kids were in Band Camp, which started at 8am, and all band students were able to go first through the registraion, regardless of last name/school year. This year, Camp is only in the evenings, so it is not an option.

I prolly should ... go pick up my prescriptions today. I got a notification last week and went up on Friday. They only had 1 of the 4 there. The pharmacist looked up and saw that I was due three more on Monday, and suggested I just come back then to pick up all four, then the system will show it as all four due to be refilled on/by the same date, versus days apart. I will probably put it off until I run the Youngst to Camp, then head down the road to the store.

I prolly should ... send off an email to the Company, inquiring as to my status. I have not heard anything, whether un-pausing the current project, or re-assigning me to another one. I am taking a look at this service my buddy had mentioned to me. I have not made a decision for sure if I want to use it. Of course, it could provide job opportunites in between the current Company's projects. Or just a whole new Company to work for, doing the same line of work. I will have to figure out a yes/no soon I presume. Edit: I just joined the mailing list. I can always opt out of contacting any job offers.

I prolly should ... do something positive and constructive today. More than likely I will end up finishing this post, then distract myself by watching videos on FB or YouTube before turning my attention to playing Warcraft for most of the afternoon. It's just so uncomfortable to be outside trying to do anything. Granted, today it is actually supposed to be BELOW 100, but it is monsoon season, and right now the humidity is around 43%. Yeah, doesn't sound like much unless you are used to our regular dry heat. It is like walking around with a wet blanket around you when trying to do anything outside - even just walking into a store. Heck, I step outside to have a smoke, and I am dripping sweat when I come back in - just standing out by the front door.

I prolly should ... just close this off and go distract myself for a few hours.
