Pop Quiz!

Didn't think there would be a test today, huh? Well ... SURPRISE! I will make it a bit easier for you and make it a multiple choice question. There is only one right answer. Write in answers may get extra attention if it is really good. If you are correct, you don't get anything except the satisfaction of being right.

This morning, about 6:45am, an incident occurred in my home. The bedroom, and narrowing that down, my bedroom. Whilst in the stage of blissful sleep (took a pill last night) I ended up doing a nosedive off the bed. Why?

A. I just rolled off the bed.

B. I was dreaming of sky-diving, and adjusting my angle of descent prior to pulling the cord.

C. The chow bell was ringing and I didn't want to be last, but lost my balance.

D. I had to use the bathroom desperately and hurried from the bed, only to slip and fall.

E. I wanted to show my Wife how I've fallen for her.

F. Other (Write-in answers welcome.

I'll answer at the end of the Post, and tomorrow post the scores. Might have to grade these on a curve...

Finished my quiet time this morning. I feel fresh and renewed with the Spirit! I think my regular AA group has a Big Book study today, so that will be good. Nothing else planned for the rest of the week, just the medical appointments on Monday. I need to write Mayo this morning about the two diuretics that they slashed down once I had the TIPS. Also, the PA at AZ Liver won't renew either of them, so need Mayo to take that over as well. I found and wore one of the pairs of compression socks yesterday. Allegedly you are to sleep with them on as well, but sleeping with socks on has never been my thing, so by 10pm they were off. I noticed this morning (as I was checking for any cuts) that the swelling has gone down a good bit in both legs - Magically overnight it seems. Now yesterday, the draining  was 12.5L and they said they got it all. But my weight, after only one small pitcher of tea, was 281lbs. Now last dry weight was a couple weeks ago and was 251lbs. Where is this 30lbs at? Fluid in my legs? So I checked my weight this morning, and I am up to 284lbs. But I know for sure the fluid in my legs went somewhere overnight, well, a portion of it did. I might wait a day or two and see what happens before reporting it to the doctors.

Yesterday's paracentesis was late enough (1pm) that I didn't finish the 4 bags of albumin until about 3:30pm. I debated getting something to eat, but wanted a dry weight check when I got home. Also I had the House Comm. meeting at 5:30pm about 4 miles from the hospital. So I just went to the Post. We finished up the meeting early, and I booked it out of there. RM had texted at one point (I had the phone on quiet) asking if I was ok and didn't I have the para that day. I told her yes, and would get the regular family update out when I got home. Which I did do. Before I left the VFW, I checked in with the Secretary of the AUX (I'm Asst.) and asked if she needed anything from me. She said not then, but would be cc'ing me probably this week sharing information and other records for me to hang on to or help with. Joy. I also need to do the minutes ASAP as they need them prior to Tuesday. And my Youngest attends his first meeting on Tuesday! I'm excited.

Today is National VJ (Victory over Japan) Day from WWII. Also coming up is on 9/11 the 25th Anniversary of the event, and 9/18 is POW/MIA Day. The Auxiliary has a birthday later this month as well, but I don't have the day in front of me.

Welp, I'm shared out this morning. Talk at ya next time!

Oh, and the answer was "A"

Givin' A Holla Out to ....

 Meditation for the Day

One secret of abundant living is the art of giving. The paradox of life is that the more you give, the more you have. If you lose your life in the service of others, you will save it. You can give abundantly and so live abundantly. You are rich in one respect — you have a spirit that is inexhaustible. Let no mean or selfish thought keep you from sharing this spirit. Of love, of help, of understanding and of sympathy, give and keep giving. Give your personal ease and comfort, your time, your money and most of all, yourself. And you will be living abundantly.

This was in my "Twenty Four Hours a Day" book for today. As soon as I read it, I realized, this is RM. Now Mom has been this way for several years, though I honestly can't say how long ago I noticed it. But she is the Giver. She even admits to her love of giving things. She bakes, especially around holidays, and gives it away. She takes time (and a some food) to a couple ladies she knows from her neighborhood. She has made room in her schedule to help me at times (though I try not to ask too often). Even I am presented with gifts she 'inadvertently picked up', or because she just saw it and thought of me. I know she does that for others as well. It really makes me proud of her, and makes me want to give as well.

You're the best, Mom!

I think I have talked about giving before in an older post. The nudges I have had and acted on, the feeling of elation inside because you helped someone in someway. I believe this is truly God giving those nudges. To teach us to share? To help the other person in some way? No idea, only He knows His Plan. But I have found out, it is getting easier to give as I grow in my spirituality. I think the "want" to do it is just inherently part of the package. Even AA supports the giving, as Step 12 is to help other alcoholics find the program and help them on their path of recovery (actually spoken about before the meditation on today's reading). Have I helped any alcoholics? I don't know. Maybe something I said clicked with them and they went off to do it. I am too young in the program to be any type of Sponsor for anyone, so my giving is in experiences and sometimes, that is all someone needs without it being crammed down their throats.

Yesterday I did go down to the Post. I saw a couple guys I hadn't seen in awhile. I did get the minutes and agendas done that needed to be done, emailed them out. I'm caught up on that until after Tuesday's meeting. I was back home after about three hours. Then I played video games most of the evening. The Wife did a store run, and ended up making (maybe just re-heating) Salisbury steaks and mashed potatoes. It hit just the spot last night!

No major plans today. Tuesday is my paracentesis, and I am ready to drain. I haven't been since the 19th due to scheduling conflicts. I know after the TIPS procedure that there could be some side effects. One is random drain amounts for a few weeks, as the body adjusts to the "bypass". Some slight swelling in the feet and legs from fluid build-up (not ascites). My legs are well loaded now. So much that it feels like the skin is just going to split open. Yesterday, I could barely get my slip-on shoes onto my feet. The 'pitting' and edema goes to nearly halfway up my thigh. The Wife says I need to let the Dr. know, and I will, on Tuesday, that way I can let them know how much was drained as well. I think the Radiology doctor changed my diuretics too much after the TIPS. She cut one from 400mg to 100mg, and the other from 80mg to 40mg. I think if we put the one back up to 80, and do about 200 on the other, it would help ... but what do I know? I'll mention this as well when I message the doctor. The edema is worse than when all this started a year ago.

And with that I will close out and get on with my day.

Relocation is Important Today

I have 'blown off' the duties of my VFW positions for the past week or two. Why? No reason, just that I am being distracted at home. Trying to work from my desk, the temptation to just 'do another meeting' or play video games. Or even the worst - facebook scroll of death. I'm just too distracted. So this morning I mentioned to the Wife that I was going to do my two regular Saturday meetings, then head up to the VFW so I should be able to focus better and get the work done. The last few months I have only been up there for meetings, so maybe it isn't bad that I spend time there.

Well, I got an answer to my nice inquiry about my medical case and care plan. They scheduled in a CT-Abdomen  on the morning of 9/8, as well as the already scheduled bloodwork, nurse and doctor consults. They need to get the updated figures from the bloodwork and the CT to bring my case to the review panel. So, I am on hold until 9/8 for sure right now.

Had a great lunch with RM yesterday. We both had salads, and spent a couple hours talking about different things. I regretted somewhat that we had to end when we did, but she was on the clock. As always though, too little time spent together. I'm looking forward to the next one, though have not even set a date as of yet.

Welp, I am in a meeting, so I am out of here....

We Interrupt This Blog Post ...

... to take a pause and get some other things done. I have my CT today at about 12:50pm, which being in the middle of the day, really ruins things. I'll have time for my AA meeting at least. This morning I need to work on the minutes I have been putting off. So let's pause here until after the CT.

That was a lengthy pause. After the CT yesterday, the blog had slipped my mind completely. I think it has to do with doing it in the mornings and all. Either way ... CT went fine as far as I could tell. Lasted about an hour. I have the test results, but don't understand the mumbo-jumbo - even with the 'patient friendly' version. I wasn't whisked off anywhere, and they haven't told me anything negative, so that means I am good to go for Thursday. I swear they track me! I was home barely 10 minutes from Mayo when they called and went over the time schedule for food/water for Thursday. I'm going to be hungry coming out of it, but don't know what type of food I will eat (soup or solids). I think I'm okay with regular food as long as I feel up to it.

General VFW meeting tonight, but it is a special one for me. The Youngest finally okayed joining the Auxiliary!! Mainly it is to drive me to meetings, and be able to sit in the meeting versus out in the car. Besides, it might lead him to do some volunteering. At least he will get to see a portion of what I do for my "jobs" with the Post. I'm paying for his first year, as it is not terrible ($45). I printed off the app and my Dad's DD-214 last night to turn in with it all (I joined under my brother). Youngest will probably not go with me tonight, but will have to next month just to be inducted and receive his podium book.

Posting is going to be sporadic this week since I have the procedure on Thursday. Hopefully will be back on track by Saturday.

"When someone says "Stop!" I never know if it is in the name of love, Hammer Time, or if I am to collaborate and listen.

I'm Tired

Yesterday started off nicely. I woke, did my routine, felt fine to drive the 30 minutes to a VFW Post for our District meeting/training. I headed out with plenty of time. When I got there, I was getting my stuff from the car: put on my VFW Riders cut, which I haven't worn in awhile, grabbed my traveling office bag and locked up. I started to put the keys in the inner pocket on my vest, and found something: a pack of cigarettes, with three left in it. I guess I hadn't worn the cut in awhile! I had no strong craving/urge to smoke, and they would have been 'stale-tasting' I am sure. But I put it back in the pocket, so share the tale with RM and the Wife later.

I guess I misunderstood a bit about these new trainings we are doing at District meetings. We still do our regular spilt Aux/Post meeting, then break for lunch, then start the training. I had plans and let my Aux Leader know I couldn't stay for the training part. My plans were to run by RM's, drop off her birthday present, visit a little, and head home with dinner at Olive Garden at 5pm. Well, I-10 runs within a quarter-mile of the Post, and unbeknownst to me, they closed Eastbound at like 8am (after I was at the Post). So traffic was terrible. Between the freeway detour, and the street I was one being one of the closest E-W through-streets, it was going to be a pain. In the first hour, I made it a quarter mile, but had managed to change streets to the one I wanted at least. This one ran N-S, but every mile is a through-street, and they were all backed up as everyone had the same idea to go over and catch another freeway. I decided to just stay on this street, as I believed it would go up to RM's. Of course not. But by then O was able to hop over to the 101 and head to RM's like normal. One hour, forty-five minutes it took to go about 16 miles. I could be at the Daughter's house in Tucson in that amount of time!

Well, I gave RM her present, visited for a bit, had my iced tea. I love how she always has iced available for me. I think it was about 3 when I headed home. Went to dinner at 5 with the birthday boy from yesterday (Middle Son). Youngest Son came as well. Oldest Son met us there. And of course, Doc, my grandson, was there. Reminds me I got a couple pics to send to RM, not good ones, as I hate doing pics. By the time we got home, I was almost falling sleep on my feet from being so worn-out. Between the traffic, sitting in the heat (even with a/c), and just stuff in general, I was wasted. So bad, I slept until almost 9a today. I know I needed it.

Welp, I gotta get out of here and get stuff done.

Don't be ashamed of who you are - that's your parents job.

Racing the Clock ...

That's a bit how I feel this morning. Woke up an hour earlier than usual (unintentionally) to start getting ready. I have a VFW District 3 training to attend today. It is all the way down in Tolleson. That sounds far, but by freeway it should only take about 30 minutes. It starts at 9am, and had it in my notes it ends about 1pm, but have seen other things that say 2pm. Either way, I am there all morning.

Yesterday was the Middle Son's 24th birthday. The Wife had the day off work (low census) and we invited him and the family to lunch at Seafood Harbor - my favorite Chinese buffet place close to home. He turned us down (the audacity!). Last night the Wife asked about inviting Middle Son again for tonight for an early dinner somewhere of his choosing. We are inviting the Oldest son and his GF as well. I'll hear updates from the Wife today about it all.

The Wife and Youngest have an appointment today with the Bank. I know we have been slow about it, and he has not pushed about it, and he doesn't have paychecks to deposit, so we never got around to setting up a bank account for him. Normally he could go anywhere, anytime to set one up, but he, like his brothers, want it linked to our account - in the way that the Wife (Not even I) can see the account, mainly in case we need to help them with some cash or something, it is easier to transfer the monies. Plus in this day and age, with everything starting to go cashless, he needs a card with money in an account. He is leaving for Cali in about a week and a half - ya never know ...

And with that, I need to get off here and do my quiet time before heading to the training.

I Almost Done Forgot ...

... to write in here today. I was going through the morning routine but when I got to the part where I write a post, I didn't even think about it and went on with whatever I do next. I was like, 'Whoa!'. So I backtracked and here we are. Sitting and staring at the screens between us, waiting for me to come up with some significant ramble to entertain you.

I mentioned yesterday I think, that at the birthday party on Saturday, my Brother and I caught up a bit. While we were talking about my medical stuff (I believe it was the TIPS), I had said something along the lines of '...and eventually get rid of this lump' and he sort of pointedly looked at my stomach. So I lifted the edge of my shirt and showed him the umbilical hernia I have going on. He about freaked at first, then he whips out his phone and begs me to show it again so he can get a picture. I asked why he would want a picture of my 'inside-out' belly button, and his reply ... that thing has a nipple on it! SMH. I tried to explain it isn't a nipple, but the actual bottom of the belly button being pushed out. HE wouldn't see it any other way though and kept on about the "nipple". Needless to say, I don't know how many beers he was in, and he never did get a picture. My Brother is an idiot at times ....

This week is not too crazy. House/Ent Comm. meeting on Tuesday. Para on Wednesday, Middle Son's birthday on Friday, and a Dist 3 training meeting on Saturday (VFW). Next week will be the busy one with a CT, and the tips procedure.

I did finally get the minutes for the Riders done, and the Agenda for the House/Ent Comm. yesterday morning. It only took me like 4 hours. Sigh. But it is done and out of the way.

Looks like I need to place an order at the grocery. I am out of soda. I'd prefer to get like a gallon of tea, but the fridge is too full to support two gallons, plus the milk. Sodas I can counter after opening. I think the Youngest is out as well.

The Wife made a quick stew last night, and I even admitted to her, it had to be one of the best renditions she has made. The potatoes and carrots were cooked to perfection - nice and soft, yet firm enough to stay in shape. I think she used one of the smaller pork tenderloins for meat, so nice chunks there. It was spiced wonderfully (even if I do add more, and hotter, after a try a few bites. I suppose I need to get off my butt and do a dinner again. I was trying for once a week, but this past week I have been fatigued for some reason. That started about Thursday, and still lingers. I think itis just yet another symptom of the medical stuff going on, or worsening. I don't know.

I did message Mayo regarding the standing doctor's orders I have at Banner Hospital for my paracentesis. I could schedule my own as need for therapeutic reasons, but limited to the 10L max drain. It expires 8/20/26. So I asked if it needs to be extended, could it be extended, what are we going to do? The reduction of fluid build-up to is supposed to decrease, does not happen miraculously overnight, and I may need to do some paras for a bit afterwards - hoping that the length of time between increases, and the drainage amount decreases. I hope to have an answer today.

Yet another prescription to get today. I have one other I am waiting to be filled, and that will be all of them this month. I also need to get some more lancets for the glucose testing. Maybe after I pick up my store order.

Geez ... Pick Something Already!

I have started recently to do a 'quiet time' for reflection, meditation, and time with God. Why? Well, because I see others doing, or claiming to, it and how much it helps them. RM has been doing her morning time with God for years now, and I think that is what pushed me into doing something of the same. I haven't done Discipleship training. I don't have a daily devotional to study a passage of the Bible each day. Right now I read a chapter (they're short) in this book RM recommended, followed with bringing my Bible out. Most days I am turn about reading the Bible. I have argued with myself that the best place to start is at the beginning. But part of me rebels, and would prefer a more methodical, devotional, teaching way of doing this. So I would just randomly open it up, and read some of the passages from that page and maybe a page or two further. Do I always make sense of it? Not a chance! Sometimes do I get 'lucky'? Sure! Even a blind squirrel is able to find a nut every now and then.

This morning I decided I would focus on reading a book of the bible. Doesn't matter how much of a chapter(s) I read, but that I do it. I decided on Psalms. In the process of finding and placing my Faith, I thought this might be a good starting spot to learn how to lift God up, share his praises, and still learn. As I started this morning, I felt better - more focused, more in-tune with what I was reading, able to apply myself to it better (I think). Then lastly comes Prayer.

Is there a perfect outline/formula for prayer? If there is, I don't know of it. I give praise, for what I have seen and what I have not seen. I ask for guidance to do His will. I ask for forgiveness for my wrongdoings, and the help to "forget" them when given up. That one is hard. Relinquishing control over things is just hard for me. I think it is a carry-over from when I was a narcissist (my drinking days) of having/keeping control.

Somewhere in all this, I started texting RM each morning. I toss out a GM!, a daily affirmation, or positive vibe, and an I love you Mom! It's good I stay in touch better. Especially when I have questions of a spiritual nature, RM is near at hand. Plus, I think she likes the attention (smirk).

Went to a birthday party for a good friend yesterday and even the Wife went with me (finally talked her into it). Tons of food! Smoked brisket, shredded pork, chicken, ribs... and that was just the meat! we ate, and visited briefly one on one with the Hosts. After a couple hours, both of us were ready to go. There was just too many people. Every room was crowded and standing room only, plus between the heat, and something I had ate, was making me nauseous. The Wife's social meter was buried in the red she told me on the way home ... where I did get sick, but felt better after. My Brother and SIL were there, so I visited a bit with him. We haven't seen each other in a while, so he caught me up on his kids' issues, and about the granddaughter living with them. Then actually asked about how I was doing, so I shared where I was at with my medical. I may need to use him for a colonoscopy appt. later this month, if the Youngest doesn't make it back from his trip in time. We briefly talked about phone habits - he prefers calling people to update them on things, and just talk. I hate talking on the phone. You have me on the phone, it's going to be short, with info that I needed quickly. Otherwise text me, and I'll get back you in some form. So my Brother tells my Sister he doesn't talk to me because I am mean on the phone. Eyeroll. What made him think that? (Duh!)

After I finish this it is a work day. I need to do the Riders minutes, and the Agenda for the House Comm. I did hear last night, unofficially still, that the Riders did have a positive vote to become a separate entity/sister organization to the VFW. Still nothing from leadership at the State or National level have sent anything to me. The website does not reflect any changes. I know it was just last weekend, but still. Sigh what can ya do?

With that I am out of here!

Doing It Differently ...

When it comes to doing things, everyone has their own style. Many times, it is the same as 'everyone else' as it is the best way to accomplish what that goal is. Many times it is a 'forced change' to purposely create a new viewpoint/way of doing that same thing, done the same way, day after day. Yesterday's meeting at the Post is a prime example.

It was on my calendar as a District 3 Training Day. Usually, that has the Post members meeting in the hall, and the Aux. in the canteen. We'd do a 1-hour training on something specific: a recent change to a form, or maybe some protocol changes. Then move into our regular meetings for District. Somewhere down the line, it was decided to do Joint Trainings for the District. That is putting the Post and Aux. together, to train each other the programs we each do, areas where we could use the help of the other, etc. The first one started off with the Aux. explaining the Programs we are accountable for, and how the Post is able to assist, as well use the same event to complete some of their program requirements. Either way, I find myself liking this much more than the training before. We should be working hand-in-hand, and not 'fighting each other' over events, etc. Personally, I did not 'learn' much of anything, as most of the information was Aux. stuff, and I already was aware of it. Our meeting in January should be interesting, as it will be the Post doing the same for the Aux. Obviously, the hope is to create a more family environment, to stop any division/rift between the two VSOs. I like it.

Changes. Sometimes they are good ones, and sometimes not. I know personally, changes have seemed the only thing I have done since September. I became sober (10 months now!). medical issues have made changes to the body (good and bad), medications changes symptoms, decisions on lifestyles have changed. Having to have a transplant, doing the TIPs procedure, healthier and controlled diet - all these are ongoing and are good changes, once they happen. What are some other changes? There is a list of them. I think the ones that top the list as my favorites: 1) sobriety; 2) quit smoking (today is Day 4, and going strong!); 3) better, controlled diet; 4) rebuilding relationships I damaged with family and friends; 5) rebuilding a relationship with God. There are many more, and these few examples are not in order of favoritism, but just what popped into my head at the time.

Smoking. Whew! Day 4, and I am still going strong. The first day, I refused to leave the house - literally. The fear that I would be tempted to stop somewhere and buy another a pack was so big in my mind... Day 2 I felt a bit better, but that was Friday, and I had to go to the Post. Knowing where the smoking patio was made some temptation come up to bum a smoke from someone, but I busied myself in the kitchen, working on the dinner. Day 3, yesterday, had to be at the Post again, but this time there were no temptations of the smoking area. No desires to stop somewhere and get a pack. Have I picked up on some weird habits in this short time? Not really. I have been craving soda more, and picked some more up. It'll be at least another week or more before I start seeing some healthy changes of not smoking (breathing easier, less coughing, etc.). I am just keeping on doing the good things I know I can do, and that is that.

Friday night at dinner (RM & PT had come as usual) I was sort of not nice. I kept making jabs at PT about things I know he is sensitive about doing or discussing. I was talking more to RM than him (as usual) and was mentioning about the probability of giving up my car keys. The TIPS procedure could have an effect of increasing my encephalopathy, and one really shouldn't drive with this condition. You hear those Silver Alerts for people with dementia in their older age, and how they just drive off somewhere. This is similar. I was even mentioning about just giving up my keys now, though I really haven't had any episodes but one (Wife caught it). I would look over and say something like 'Even at my younger age I probably will be giving up my car keys so I don't hurt anyone'. It went completely over his head. No rection. I am not even sure he heard me. Another time I made a comment about an Old Folks table, and he hmm'ed/haw'ed saying something like he wasn't old. My goodness man! You're 89 years old! You ARE old. Another jab was about how he said he does like the Chair Tai Chi, and I said something like 'Isn't that hard to do from a reclining position in your easy chair with you eyes shut? He grumbled about that one. In short, I was mean, on purpose. I should apologize. I know I should. But I don't want to. Problems to take to God ...

And with that, I am getting off the ol' bloggo. Nothing on the calendar today, so figure I may be playing games all day - unless the Wife decides it is Honey-Do time. Ugh.

It Is Finished ...

No, not the bible quote, but my IOP I had to attend. After 2 months, 11 hours per week, this step in my journey is over. In some ways I compare it to a video game where I have just finished my 'Apprenticeship' and now may roam the world better equipped in mind and body. I've mentioned before that I really did enjoy this course and I did. I learned more about my triggers, ways to cope with things and over all how to be more self-aware. But that ends today. My Group Lead should have my completion paperwork ready for when session is over today, which I will promptly forward over to Mayo. More on that in a minute.

Last Wednesday during my 'personal' session with the Group Lead, we did the ending self-exam. That gal said she was going to miss me and that I was one of the most fun people they have had in sessions in awhile. They had even allotted me like a couple minutes after each session to share a joke - I need to find a good one for today.

So once I get the completion paperwork, and promptly get it over to Mayo, it concludes my part of the deferments that I am in control of. The psychologist I meet once a month, and last week, said it should go to the Transplant Council this week (they meet on Wednesdays) and I could have an answer this week about making the Waiting List, or if other issues came up that need to be addressed beforehand.

Yesterday I went and did lab work (1 vial of blood) and then headed to Walgreens. I did not "lose it". I did not yell and scream. I explained what happened, and the lady went to check my records on the computer. She says,"Well, the prescription is available for the full amount as of 6/4. I looked at her, and said, "Today's the 8th. Fill it, now. I never got the refill notice from Walgreens, otherwise this would not be happening." I didn't want to wait around there for 30-45 minutes (they are only like 5 minutes from home) so I went home. Come afternoon after I got the text it was ready, I thought I should go up and get it, plus the one for my Wife, but I couldn't. My mind was ... messed up. I didn't feel right driving (that's HUGE coming from me). I thought the Youngest would be out of bed soon, and he could drive us up, hit the drive-thru, and back home in 10 minutes. Only he didn't get up. The Wife texted, asking if I got hers, and briefly in text said no, don't feel good. They are open until 9pm. Get mine too. And she did.

So I took some last night, and am able to already tell a difference from not taking this for a week. I was up three additional times last night to drain the bladder. I'm still waking up, so will as the day goes how my head feels. I do have an Auxiliary meeting tonight.

Alright. So there may be some really good news within the next couple days. I'm off to find a good joke.

I'm Tired Already ...

... thinking about what I need to get done today. I have my IOP this morning. After that I need to head to Sam's Club for some of the dinner items for the Riders Dinner tomorrow. I may have to stop at the regular grocery to make sure I have everything. I only signed up for chips and queso, but am getting all the veggies/cheese for toppings. After I think I have everything (because you know, even with a list I will miss something) I'll run most of it out to the Post and put in the fridge. I have mixed feelings about the Dinner. At the House Comm. meeting on Tuesday, the Jr Vice was saying he wants to invite Motero Life, a motorcycle group that supports Vets, etc. The  last event they came, bringing about 100 + people, and we just have not done a dinner for that many people. I am not sure we will have enough food. I guess earlier out is earlier done.

Not much for the rest of the week: IOP tomorrow morning, then the day is clear. I'll be at the Post early to help get set up for the Dinner. Saturday is an Aux Dist/Dept President training. It is in Mesa from like 10a-12p... or maybe it is 1p. It is open to any one that wants to attend, and I am debating. I think the training is more about leadership and reports, but at the different levels and who are responsible for them. But what do I know. I am not sure I am going, yet.

Well, I feel my body saying it is time to go to the Reading Room, so I'll talk atcha later ...

Another "Nothing" Day

It's Wednesday, and I cancelled the paracentesis I had previously scheduled for this morning. I do have some fluid build up, but it isn't overly uncomfortable yet. I think I'll go next week, that'll be another three weeks I went without draining. For the most part, the medications are handling my symptoms well. Encephalology has 'cleared' somewhat, though I still am having short-term memory issues, and at times, lose track/focus. With all the weight loss, the knees/hips/back feel slightly less pain, butt still requires me to use a cane for walking.

Yesterday ended well. I had my IOP in the morning, followed by a trip to Safelite for a windshield replacement. Afterwards, my car now tells me it has pre-collision 'something-or-other' and SEE DEALER. It won't shut off the message or the dash light. I figured maybe a few starts and stops would take care of it (like new air sensors with tires). After I got home, and had time to check my emails, I saw one from Safelite that explained the new issue - that if the settings for certain anti-collision features had been turned off, they will need to be reset, as the 'camera in the windshield' they had to reset the factory defaults when they calibrated it. They could have told me in person.... I headed to the VFW for the House/Entertainment meeting, and we finished early enough, I rushed home to get into the Zoom meeting for my AA/Support Liver group. I was only 5 minutes late, but the weekly meeting is done.

With the Para cancelled this morning, I do not have anything until 2pm with my group leader for a short personal check-in. I should work on the minutes from the meeting, but I don't think so today.

... and now I am off to do something...

Saturday, April 25

Up Early Today ...

... and actually on purpose. Today we have a longer than usual District 3 meeting(s) for the VFW. Mostly longer because of elections. I am up early so I can get through my morning medical routine (done) and to arrive at the Post round 8-8:30am.

Post stuff will take up most of the morning, then the Youngest and I are meeting our Guild Leader from Warcraft. He is in town from out of state for work, and we plan to meet up for dinner near where he is staying. It's nice sometimes to be able to put a face and a name together of online friends.

This is heading into the last week of April, and that means some Mayo appointments coming up in early May. I have a Psych consult by Zoom, an in person psych visit (different person) and a blood draw all pretty much the first week. I should check my results from last week, and see if they found any trace of THC still in my system....

With that, I am outta here.

Random Stuff

I don't have anything of extreme noteworthiness to share today. So I am going to just ramble.

I have a Para scheduled tomorrow. Today I need to decide if I need to use it or not. If not, I need to call and cancel the appointment, and schedule another one into May. I'm only slightly uncomfortable with the build-up, but feel I could go another week. Guess I will decide this afternoon.

IOP this morning. This is a nice program if you are struggling with substance abuse with the support and sharing. Learning different ways to work around your addiction and better yourself are good things, but I was a fortunate one, I guess. I never had cravings after I quit drinking. Granted it has only been just over 6 months, But overall this class does nothing for me, except check a box for Mayo. Same with the weekly AA meetings.

Hoping Walgreens gets in a couple of my prescriptions in. I have two I ran out of while filling my pillbox for this week. I went up Friday and checked status on four of them, and so far have gotten 1 filled, 1 partially filled, and waiting on two (the two I need to complete the week out). Supposed to be in by tomorrow they said last time I checked (Monday).

The General and Auxiliary meetings for the month are tonight, and it is the time of year for nominations/voting for leadership. I already know I am going to be nominated for 3rd Year Trustee in the Aux. I have decided to accept. The duties I would need to do only happen once per quarter as we go over the figures as an audit to be sure all is accounted for. This is a 3-year term, so shouldn't be asked to run for anything else for the next few years.

Riders meeting this Monday. I need to put together the Agenda. Nominations... Ugh. No idea how this is going to go. I've checked that our Treasurer is willing to resume duties for the new term. The Interim Director has not said one way or the other. And a Vice Director position needs filled as well. At times I feel like I am the only one wanting to expand and grow, and everyone seems content to just "wear the patch". Well, July may bring some changes as the VFWRG splits from the Post, and becomes their own like the Auxiliary. New voting, new bylaws, maybe new patch.

No appointments with Mayo until May 1st as of right now. I have a couple consults next month, a blood/urine sample given, and that is pretty much it. Same going into July, where I hope to have all the deferments done, and will get on the Waiting List finally.

Well, I guess that's more of my griping than you want to hear...

When It Starts With A Coffee ....

... you know it is going to be a day. It is barely 9am and I have downed my cup of coffee this morning. Not that it is totally weird, but I don't drink coffee often, and my mug is one of those ones big enough to be 2. ...And now I see it is *really* going to be a weird day. I just did my numbers for the morning, and they are: BP 97/54, pulse 58, glucose 128. What do the numbers mean? Well, that's the lowest BP I think I have EVER had, and this one was after 4 readings. It kept coming up lower, so, even though it showed I had battery power, I replaced the batteries, and got this reading. and the glucose is about my normal range.

So the BP is a little lower than my average of 105-110/ 65'ish. Am I just that relaxed and lethargic this morning? Or is something going on? I don't know....

Things have finally slowed down a bit in the medical area of my life. With Mayo Clinic involved, and the doctors all  'stepping back', my appointments have almost disappeared. Seemed like a had a blood draw and a paracentesis and an appointment somewhere every week (I'm sure I'm exaggerating a bit). Either way, now I am doing the paracentesis once a week (this month on Wednesdays at 11am) and that's about it. Mayo has nothing for me until the 17th, when I do an online 'Zoom-type' education class about the preliminary procedures for transplant, etc. that Mayo does. After that, I'm just waiting on the list of places I need to go, and doctors I need to see, on the week of the 23rd. Liver, Kidney and PCP all backed off and I have those appointments in April (2 with bloodwork - always taking blood...). Kind of nice, but leaves quite a bit of time to think about things - and that is  sometimes a bad thing. My imagination can get pretty wild.

Got some reading done! Having forced myself to try again, I found I am able to read without the comprehension issues I was having before. I thin it may have been part of the encephalophagy, so good sign that the meds are improving that? I hope so... Either way, I got onto Goodreads last night and updated my  reading goals for the year. I thin k I mentioned I dropped it from 250 to 100 this year, since I was having the reading issue. I think it may still be hard to hit 100, as I can read and comprehend better, but still "tire" the mind fairly quick in a short time span. Gotta build up the endurance again! I know RM is happy about it, as I Am her "Reader Child", and enjoy books as she does. On a side note, RM, I found out this last week that one of my Riders is a published author! He actually came to me and was talking about it, versus me searching him out. He said he has like nine books, and gave me a list of six of them for now. So, I have a mission this weekend to locate one of the books and check it out. It'd be cool to know him, and enjoy his books! Plus, the author signatures!

I need to work on the meeting notes from this past Tuesday's House & Entertainment meeting. Shouldn't be too bad, as the House part was short, and the Entertainment was mostly confirming event issues for the upcoming 100th Birthday of the VFW Post at the end of the month. This Tuesday is our regular general meetings. Friday (3/13) is the Rider's Dinner night, and we are bringing back our Soup Night! Have several sign-ups (finally) and it is happening.

Welp, late last week, and early this week, the registration department at Banner Hospital has called me several times. The first was the usual every week call, to re-verify all my information for me, billing insurance, etc. Then they called back saying that I have reached my out of pocket with my insurance (I knew this) but still had a balance to pay at the hospital (of course I do, and I plan to pay it). They practically were demanding I do a payment plan with them, and not just a random figure, it has to be broken down over a 12- or 24-month period, so if I said $100/month, they were like no, and we arrived at a final figure of about $259/month for the time being. Their loss. Before, they were "requiring" a patient payment of $342 for each para I got (4 per month) so now they get $259/mo, instead of a $342 payment every two weeks. Huh, 250 instead of 684...hospital math?

Sigh. Seems that is all I think about nowadays is medical crap, and payments. Such has become my life at this time. It is even starting to interfere with my VFW work. And let's not even start about the job searching....

Think I covered most of what's happening around here. The Wife and I have our 35th Anniversary coming up the end of this month, and have pretty much decided that I would make plans. We are going to do a weekend in southern AZ, as I have not travelled that part of the state much. I haven't really been checking hotels in some of the larger towns like Bisbee, Tombstone, and Sierra Vista (near Ft Huachuca Army base) but need to work on it more. mostly looking at events going on at that location, or regular daily activities. Something new for the Wife and I to do. It has become sort of our goal after the Youngest graduated HS, and that is to try to get out more to social events/happenings not just in our area, but the Valley, or where we are travelling to/from. We've had some good ones, and some bad ones, but it was something we did together, and had not done before (some of them).

Welp, I need to close this off and shoot RM a text letting her know I posted something. Then I will get my stuff together and get out of the house. Have a prescription to pick up. Should run the car through the car wash. Then head to the VFW, where I will bring up my laptop and do the meeting minutes, and probably end of searching for our anniversary stuff as well.

Tucking In On A Sunday Night

Your first Post of the 2026 year.

It is almost bedtime. I feel I have pretty much wasted today, and most of yesterday, and most days of last week. The whole waking up just feeling "off" be it due to meds, or body changes, it just doesn't set well with me to lay around, or sit around (which I cannot do) all day. Makes me feel like I am wasting time I could be doing something important, or needed, or just ... something.

For the month of January, I have appointments each Monday for a paracentesis. Most are 8-9 am, so I don't waste much of the day, and I think one is at 10:30. Either way, with appointments, I am usually in and out within the hour. Last week, 9.1 Liters were drained before we stopped. Something to do with the catheter/needle/device. Nurse stated there was still some fluid i the abdomen, but they would have to re-stick me, and for 3+ liters, I didn't want to go through that again, on the same morning. So, theory and hypothesis would concur that there might be more than 14 Liters in this week's drain. Or, as I sincerely hope, it is actually lower than that (showing that meds/diet/something) is finally working the way it should. Tomorrow will tell....

The Wife woke me this morning, saying she was off to church. I said I didn't feel up to it, and I didn't. Nausea has been hanging around here too long, and I need to kick this to the curb. Wife did bring some Arby's back for lunch, and I was able to eat half, before my taste buds shut down. Between a bite of hamburger, and a curly fry, the taste just left, and I had dry lumps of food to finish. After, I laid down for awhile, but just felt like I was wasting time (like I would anywhere else) so said I was headed up to the Post for a change of scenery (I'm home way too much now). Went there for a couple hours or so, said some hellos, played some games on the tablet, then headed home before 6pm.

Wife was gone, so I kicked into my evening wear (satin pajamas with the red velvet robe) ha! PJ's and a T-shirt... Meetings resume their regular scheduled dates this month with the Post. With the Holidays, and events, meeting cancels, event schedules, house parties, sigh. It's been a month! Anyways, I have everything pretty much set for the House meeting on Tuesday. Riders Dinner on Friday (Spaghetti, garlic bread, salad). Haven't decided about dinner. They need someone to bring salad, so I may wait a day or two to see if any others offer up. Trying to get more people to volunteer in this group.

Went through the bills that showed up this last week. Aside from regular bills, there hasn't been much. Most of my medical was at patient limits by October, and the majority of that is on a "credit card" for the hospital. I did have one bill come in from the ER docs, for that first date of service, I will go ahead and pay. The minimum on the card. Electric bill came, but isn't sue for a couple weeks, but it will go out this week as well. This week will start the accumulation of new medical bills for me.

First one is tomorrow, for about $371 patient responsibility. Guess what that means? Yup! New spreadsheet!! Since this all started in September, I have gotten somewhat of a chance to learn more of Excel. I had one of the "bibles" I'd bought a few years ago, but the functions, etc. it goes over, is above my head. I need a more basic one for regular arithmetic formulas, text join, splits, etc. Maybe upping my skills will up my getting a job game.

The end of December I made the move to claim Disability. I've been told there is a difference between SS Disability, and just Disability. The one D gets less money. not worried, it's to supplement costs with all the medical. I determined through the online process, there was no way for me to submit an application, even with my 500Mb (exaggerated) of medical, birth cert, etc. So at some point this week I need to go to a SSN office and meet with someone that can direct me to where I need to go for assistance. Luckily, there are two offices within 10 miles of the house. I think we will pencil that in for Tuesday. I got to go look if I have to call for an appointment or just show up....

With that all said, I'm getting off of here. I know RM has been hinting I haven't been updating here (or anywhere) but no sense if there is no new info to share. Everyone knows I feel nauseous some days, better some others, and know to just leave me alone.

Sunday Morning, and Back to Bed

Spent part of Friday up at the Post. I did not stay late, as chest was hurting, and I still was not able to draw 'deep' breathes without the flare-up. Saturday was a filled day. Veterans from the Veterans Home here in Phoenix were invited to our Post (again) for a lunch in support of Veterans Day. Our Riders chapter, and the open invite for any motorcycle riders, were providing an escort. Not I, though, since I don't "ride". But I was there to spend some time with the Vets. They were so happy to be out of the Home even if only for a couple hours, and to have someone listen to them, or even just they listen to us. I sure would not want to live in a home like this if I get that old and bad, but many do not have family to help care for them, or provide living space.

Afterwards it was a waiting game. We had Farmers Insurance and Operation BBQ Relief throwing a buffet-style dinner that evening at the Post as well. Open to the public, for Vets, First Responders, and the community. A local food place (Little Miss BBQ) provided the food and all. We have eaten at this place before, and it is extremely good! So I stuck around. C'mon, free food, BBQ at that?!? Well, no BBQ, but had some smoked turkey and pork loin. There were some sides, but nothing to write home about - no cole slaw though (pout). I did have seconds, though later I regretted it. Had to purge a bit from over-eating (stomach couldn't handle that much food). Talked to my Brother a little bit, and I was home by about 8pm.

Today is a "free" day, where I do not have anything going on in my calendar. So that means I need to catch up on my VFW reports/minutes/etc. That's the plan anyways. As of yesterday, the pain in the chest had receded quite a bit, and I was able to breather deeper, and relax more. This morning it still feels good. While at the hospital this past week, they did prescribe a new medicine, Midodrine, I believe it is to help keep my heart rate down. They gave it to me that night at the hospital, but my BP was so low, it wouldn't do anything (BP was like 90/57 and my heart rate was like 157). I hate that it is a three times/day with food, but at this point, anything to get this done with and feeling good until I see that specialist.

Tomorrow is the Marine Corps 250th birthday, and they are doing a little thing at the Post. Pot-luck dinner with a cake. My Brother mentioned a mutual friend was in town (finalizing on packing the house as they moved to Virginia) and he is planning on coming up to the Post, so I am making a visit there tomorrow. Tuesday, the Post is putting on three flag raising ceremonies, starting at 8am, but I am only going to the one at the Post (at 10am. I invited the Youngest to join me, as he has once or twice before. I suppose I will get his answer tomorrow. Wednesday is our re-scheduled General meetings (usually Tuesday - but holiday). Friday is the Riders dinner. I am not going. I sent out an email last week telling the Riders we needed volunteers to bring a side, and a dessert (one of each) and they needed to figure it out. Getting tired of feeling like I have to volunteer my time/money for every meal we do, as one wants to step up and help. Well, I am forcing their hand now. If it is a bad dinner, they'll know why. Besides, I am not big on meatball subs....

That's my upcoming week pretty much. I do have a blood draw for the Kidney Dr on Thursday I think, but no other appointments this week. Let's hope I feel as good as I do right now (or better) through the rest of the week.

It's Always the Little Things ....

... that make you wonder why are you even alive at times. Like, for instance, this little thing called breathing, that most people like to do. I found out I quite enjoy it, until it is taken away from me. Yeah, I have been quite short of breath the past few days. My next paracentesis isn't until Monday the 10th, so trying to hold out until then. Not wanting to do the 6-hour ER Room experience again.

So yeah, it's after Halloween and here I am playing the Stay-Puff Marshmallow man (or I feel like it). I think if I make it through to Monday, they are going to drain 13+Liters. I'm that distended. Oh, and eating? What's that? Over the past three days I have been able to get about 10-15 bites of food down at a time. I think I am mostly surviving on vanilla shakes right now. Seems to be the only thing I can get down and feel like I actually got something in my stomach.

So enough about me and my medical.

I feel the eggshells under my feet crackle as I gingerly step around anything to do with the Post. This past weekend is going to have a few repercussions. Being Phoenix, and the last week of Nascar Racing, many of the Post members went to the race (they had campers, etc.). Needless to say, it included enough of the leadership staff, and working staff of the Canteen and Post, that some tings did not get done. The worst one being Saturday Night's Post dinner. No one showed up to cook anything, and it was not cancelled. I know the Commander is going to be livid, as this is the 2nd month in a row this has happened. Tonight is the House & Entertainment Committee meetings, and I am leery as to if the Commander will be there tonight. Normally these comms do not deal with the Post Dinner, but seeing as how many are part of the crew that helps on them.....who knows. I know I did my job(s) and I ain't in the line of fire.

Welp, ain't gonna do no one no good to sit here and gripe about it.
